Transportation emissions are becoming a larger issue for state and federal governments. Policymakers and grant writers are primarily concerned with two forms of emissions: greenhouse gases (GHGs) and smog-forming NOx.

Greenhouse Gases (GHG)

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) uses lifecycle analysis to calculate the carbon intensity of a fuel pathway. Fossil CNG produces 14% less GHG emissions than Diesel.

Greenhouse gas reduction is even greater when renewable natural gas (RNG) is used to power a natural gas vehicle (NGV). See the RNG 101 section for more information.

NOx

NGVs running a new Cummins Near Zero engine emit 10 times less NOx than the current standard for diesel engines.

Recent studies show that in-use diesel NOx emissions are even higher than advertised and that CNG emissions are lower
