What is it?

Biogas is a product of decomposing organic material. Biogas can come from many sources including agricultural waste, food waste, landfills and wastewater treatment plants. Biogas can be burned for electricity or heat or can be upgraded and used as a transportation fuel.

Because biogas is a mixture of different gases, a second processing step is required if it is to be used as a transportation fuel. After undergoing a cleaning process to remove impurities – the end product is 98% methane, renewable natural gas (RNG).

RNG is identical to fossil natural gas and can be transported via pipelines and used in natural gas vehicle engines.
